Here we go with a brand new and shiny Ubuntu Lucid.
The goal of this page is mainly to be some kind of `backup reference guide´ for my `customized´ system.
Post-installation
After installation, the system needs to reboot (without the live USB).
The booting screen is adapted to your resolution, which results in a nicer looking booting screen.
Plymouth is nice, but again: you have no idea it is loading or hanging...
Ctrl+Alt+Del
Gives the option to logout, shutdown,...
Notifications
The smooth black click-through boxes in the upper right screen (since 9.04) are a bit stylized. Still no customization...
Theme
JI've chosen for the Ubuntu Dust theme. GTK-theme is standard in Ubuntu. Emerald Dust theme here.
Compiz-Fusion
Usefull eyecandy, updated to 0.8.4.
sudo apt-get install fusion-icon
Synaptic
Things I need to remove:
f-spot, tomboy, Evolution (via synaptic: all), ekiga, nautilus-sendto, totem (everything)...
Things I need to install
make, autoconf, gcc, irssi, camorama, qcad, bluefish, inkscape, mail-notification, build-essential, aria2c, homebank, xchat, smplayer...
pecan for pidgin
This is also a very useful site
Firefox - Thunderbird
Firefox: standard in Ubuntu.
I use no mail-client (desktop is pimary machine, laptop is via webmail).
Pidgin - Empathy - aMSN
- Pidgin still sucks donkey balls. Still no voice/video.
- I use the default Empathy (which is basically
the same as Pidgin)
- Since Facebook came along, a lot of people used that instead of MSN. Development of aMSN seems stopped (and no news on aMSN2).
I prefer the multi protocol Empathy...
